Biography:
Head of the Baggins family, he dwelt alone at Bag End in Hobbiton, until Gandalf involved in the Quest of Erebor in April 2941 (Third Age), and so drew the Hobbits into the great affairs of the end of the Third Age.
During his journey to the Lonely Mountain, Bilbo came upon The One Ring in an orc-hold of the Misty Mountains. Bilbo's encounter with the creature, Gollum and the rest of his travels and his involvement with the Dragon Smaug, the Battle of the Five Armies and his travels with Gandalf and the dwarves (including Glóin, the father of Gimli, who would later factor into the War of the Ring) are recorded in the Red Book of Westmarch.
Bilbo returned from his journeys and eventually (reluctantly) passed the Ring on to his nephew and adopted heir, Frodo Baggins, who would later himself become a paramount factor in the War of the Ring.
At the end of the Third Age, Bilbo crossed over the sea with Gandalf, Elrond, Galadriel, Frodo and others and left Middle-Earth.
