Notable Quotes:

“Radagast the Brown!  Radagast the Bird-tamer!  Radagast the Simple!  Radagast the Fool!"

"If we speak of poisoned tongues what shall we say of yours, young serpent?"

"Gibbets and crows!  Dotard! What is the house of Eorl but a thatched barn where brigands drink in the reek, and their brats roll on the floor among the dogs?"

"Later!  Later!! Yes, when you also have the Keys of Barad-dûr itself, I suppose; and the crowns of seven kings, and the rods of the Five Wizards, and have purchased yourself a pair of boots many sizes larger than those that you wear now. A modest plan. Hardly one in which my help is needed!"

"I did not spend long study on these matters for naught. You have doomed yourselves, and you know it. And it will afford me some comfort as I wander to think that you pulled down your own house when you destroyed mine. And now, what ship will bear you back across so wide a sea?  It will be a grey ship, and full of ghosts."

Biography:

Most often called Saruman the White, he was the First of the Five Wizards to arrive in Middle-Earth, at the end of the first millennium of the Third Age.

He was said to be the eldest of the order, and Gandalf acknowledged him as the chief of the Istari.

For a thousand years, and maybe more, he journeyed in the East of Middle-Earth, and was little heard of in the West.  He had returned, though, by 2463 III, for he was present at the foundation of the Council of the Wise, and was made its chief (although both Elrond and Galadriel would have preferred Gandalf to take this position.)

It was at about this time that Saruman began to study the Rings of Power, their history, and the means of their making.  In 2759 III, he was given the keys of Orthanc by Steward Beren of Minas Tirith, and took up his abode there.

He continued his researches into ring-lore, and the making of devices, and was accustomed to watch the stars from the pinnacle of the Tower.  He visited Minas Tirith to research the history of the Rings, and found among the ancient books and scrolls the story of the death of Isildur and the loss of the Ruling Ring.

In 2851 III, the Council discovered proof that the Necromancer of Dol Guldur in Southern Mirkwood was none other than Sauron returned.  Many of the Wise wished to assail his fortress at once and drive him out, but Saruman spoke against this, and dissuaded the Council from mounting an assault.  It was only after ninety years had passed that he acquiesced and aided the Council in assailing Dol Guldur, driving Sauron out of Mirkwood.  Saruman's knowledge was vital in this victory, albeit grudgingly given, as time would prove.

When the Council debated the Rings of Power, Saruman claimed that his researches showed that The One Ring had been lost forever.  It was later shown that Saruman did not in fact believe this, and was in fact searching for it.  He later learned of its general whereabouts in the Shire, and subtly recruited the honest and innocent Wizard Radagast to bring Gandalf to Isengard.  There Saruman betrayed him (and the Council as well) and imprisoned him there, while he openly declared his treachery and sought to recapture the Ring for himself.  By foul craft Saruman bred a new race of Orcs, his fighting "Uruk-Hai", who could not only withstand sunlight, but also cover great distance at great speed.  They were ferocious.
