Biography:
Shelob is a spider of mammoth proportions. Referred to as "the last child of Ungoliant to trouble the unhappy world," she dwelt in the upper passes of the Ephel Dúath, the Mountains of Shadow, the westernmost march of the borders of Mordor.
Worshipped by Gollum, she waited in her cavernous passages for him to lead Frodo and Samwise to her, out of Gollum's hopes that when she was finished eating, she would throw away the bones and the empty clothes, and he would once again reclaim his precious, the Ring.
However Gollum's plan was unsuccessful, and Samwise ended up beating off a vicious attack by Shelob in Cirith Gorgor. Scoring her with dreadful wounds, he damaged her eyes, shore off a claw and stabbed her in the abdomen. She slithered back to the safety of her passages...but not before she had stung Frodo in the neck and paralyzed him. Her fate after that affray is unknown, but it is not likely she survived for long, as Sauron's armies were vanquished and the men of the West were now free to rid Mordor of any foul presence.
